The High Rise Beckons
Comedy, Short Films, 31-Jan-2024
A sensual advertisement for the lofty high-rise buildings in an ambiguous metropolis. “The High Rise Beckons,” directed by Matt Barats, is a satirical commercial real estate ad where we’re tempted by an oddly erotic narrator and slow punch-in shots of various properties. Building to building, we observe shiny high-rises with sharp corners and immaculate views. The anonymous speaker never foregoes any of the mouthwatering details. Akin to a late-night porn advertisement, the effect is comedic and delivers a punchy commentary on the world of real-estate development. The two and a half minute short contrasts interestingly with the hour and forty minute feature documentary, “Cash Cow,” from Barats that we featured last week. -JM.
