The Trial
23-Jun-2021
A college student wakes up late and must stand trial as he heads to class. Joshua Gleiser directs “The Trial,” an absurdist snapshot coursing with lo-fi manic energy about a young man accused of being spoiled, undisciplined, egotistical and more. Upon waking up, he is reprimanded by an old-timey judge standing in his apartment. Joining the prosecution’s side is the collegiate’s nagging mother and his disappointed father, who we hear coming from a radio broadcast at a grocery store. On the defense, the man is accompanied by his lawyer, attempting to fend off the onslaught of accusations: “remember, we do have evidence of self-worth.” Fast-paced and cleverly designed, Gleiser’s film taps into a familiar set of concerns for young, aspiring artists fueled by a precarious combination of ego and self-doubt. -KA.
