The Virgin, The Old Lady, The Journey
Drama, Short Films, 12-May-2023
Over the course of several months, a Colombian immigrant working as a cleaner in New York converses with her grandmother in a series of phone calls and voice messages. Natalia Luque directs the tender portrait, “The Virgin, The Old Lady, The Journey,” a richly drawn study on familial bonds and long-distance communication that sets a vivid mood of unease. In her janitorial position, Rocío struggles to make ends meet in a foreign city while trying to stay closely in touch with her grandmother. As time passes, Rocío begins to sense a shift in the demeanor of her family back home as lethargy in the matriarch leads to doctors visits and growing concern. Rendered with lovely simplicity and lived-in detail, it’s a profound exploration of heartache and isolation shouldered by the absorbing performance of Laura Osma. -KA Director, Writer: Natalia Luque.
