They Fly By Night
33m
At a mysterious job interview, a massively in-debt young man finds himself caught up in an unpredictable scheme with a Gen-X Upcycler. “They Fly By Night,” directed by Ross Kolton and Bill Tangradi, is a homespun crime comedy set in a fully fleshed-out world of vintage goods buying/selling, and (morally justified) criminal behavior. When Allen Gravely arrives at a desert Airbnb, he’s not there for a vacation getaway but for a cryptic opportunity with a man named Jerry Schrap, an eccentric junk picker who rents out properties crammed with odd items for sale. Skeptical but desperate, Allen agrees to join him on a “shady” project, but it soon enters into the realm of the precarious and harebrained. The film is held together with its unfolding revelations and spirited performances: co-director Tangradi plays the charismatic con-man while Alex Urbom plays the apprehensive Allen. We previously featured Kolton with his 2014 film, “Aldo,” another scrappy mid-length piece of California noir.
