Wake Me When I Leave

"I recently had the pleasure of watching Claire Denis’ “Trouble Every Day” for the first time. I love her movies. I love how you have to work for them in order to figure out what’s going on. Afterwards, I realized I hadn’t read the synopsis on the back of the DVD, so I gave it a look. It went into great detail about the plot and spoiled all the fun! Keeping this in mind, I urge you, watch “Wake Me When I Leave” before you read the following blurb and never, EVER look up the plot of a Claire Denis film if you haven’t seen it yet. Thank you. So anyway, as you can imagine, I’ve had a hard time summing up “Wake Me When I Leave.” I mean, the logline is good and oblique and all that, and that works for IMDB and maybe it’ll work for festivals (we’ll see!) But in conversation, it’s a tough one to summarize. And even though it’s an easy out, I try not to describe “Wake Me When I Leave” as being “about dreams.” I’d rather think of it as a relationship movie with the dream as a medium through which to tell the story. It’s a little gimmicky and wouldn’t work as a synopsis, but conversationally? It’ll work for now. Anyway, making a film means asking for and cashing in on so many favors, so I want to thank everyone, everyone, everyone who made this all possible." -Tyler Rubenfeld
