Where's South?
Amidst strange encounters in her life and work, a Brazilian filmmaker living in Chicago is struck by a compelling question. João Rubio Rubinato and Lua Borges direct “Where’s South?” a 16mm film that ruminates on being far from home despite having footing somewhere else. When Helena arrives late for a commercial shoot that she’s directing, she conflicts with her DP and struggles to get through the day. On morning walks and in her time alone, she reminisces about Brazil chatting with her peers about some footage she shot the last time she was home and feelings of dissatisfaction of what it has come to be. They have questions about the concept, and she struggles to answer. An odd interaction with a stranger on the waterfront offers Helena some possible insight into a different approach. The drifting spirit of the film is an apt portrayal of young adulthood, flailing creative aspirations, and the self-doubt of it all. -JM. Directors: João Rubio Rubinato and Lua Borges.
